Can I have an application? Is there an application fee?
Pre-applications can be printed from the “Forms/Documents” tab or picked up from our office during normal business hours. The Pre-Application can be mailed back or dropped off at the Lakeview Tower office. There is not an application fee. This is the first step in applying for housing assistance. (The Full Application Form is only required if you have been notified by our office that you are at the top of the waitlist.)
What are the times and days to return forms/documents?
Completed forms/documents can be dropped off at our office Monday thru Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. There is a "Drop Box” slot outside the office door. Documents can also be submitted via mail to MHRC, 111 S Washington Ave, Madison, SD 57042.
How do I get to your building?
The Madison Housing Authority is located at 111 S Washington Ave.
How old do you have to be to apply? Do I have to be 18?
It is a federal regulation that you must be at least 18 years of age or legally emancipated to be eligible for Section 8 or Public Housing.
What is the difference between Section 8 and Public Housing?
The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program enables families to locate a residence with the landlord they choose as long as the landlord is not a relative. This landlord must be willing to participate in the Section 8 Program and the unit must pass an initial inspection and yearly inspections thereafter. Public Housing units are owned and managed by the Madison Housing Authority.
Who accepts the Section 8 Program? Does every landlord have to? Can I get a landlord list from your office?
There are numerous landlords in the Madison and Howard area who participate in the Section 8 Program. Please know that a landlord has the option not to participate in our program. A list of landlords who accept Section 8 can be printed off the “Forms/Documents” tab or picked up at our office. This listing includes income-based housing in Madison and also the other apartment complexes in Madison.
Do you have emergency housing?
Unfortunately we do not provide emergency assistance.
What if I don't have a job or income? Do I qualify if I'm a single parent? Do I have to have children to apply? What if I'm a college student?
Anyone can apply for housing assistance.
How much will my rent be?
Your portion of your rent is dependent upon the income in the household.
What if I change jobs, if my hours at work are increased or decreased, if I lose my job, or being receiving unemployment benefit income?
Within ten (10) days you need to provide our office with a completed “Tenant Change Form” so that your portion of the rent can be re-calculated. This form can be printed from the “Forms/Documents” tab or picked up from our office.
