Section 8 Voucher Program
SECTION 8 VOUCHER PROGRAM
The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a federally funded program administered by the Madison Housing and Redevelopment Commission. The program is designed to help low income families pay for modest rental housing of their choice. They are primarily responsible for locating their own housing.
As funds become available, the next applicant on the waiting list is contacted. After they are certified eligible for the program, they are issued a Housing Voucher. This document enables the applicant to locate a unit of their choice and receive assistance. The unit must be inspected and meet or exceed HUD’s Housing Quality Standards. There is a maximum amount of rental subsidy that will be paid in behalf of the tenant each month. It is the tenant’s responsibility to pay the difference between the subsidy amount and the contract rent.
To be eligible for rental assistance, an applicant’s gross annual income cannot exceed the very low income limit most recently published by HUD. Tenant’s portion of the rent is based upon 30% of adjusted gross income in accordance with legislation after allowable deductions:
1. A deduction of $400.00 per elderly family
2. A deduction of $480.00 per dependent child
3. A deduction for elderly/handicapped individuals for extraordinary
Medical expenses were not compensated for or covered by insurance
(Defined for this purpose to mean medical expensed in excess of 3% of total elderly family income)
4. A deduction for child care expense which enables a family member to go to work or school
STUDENT QUALIFYING FACTS FOR SECTION 8 VOUCHER:
Each student enrolled in an Institution of Higher Education must meet one of the following.
1. A veteran of the US Armed Forces
2. A single person who is at least 24 years of age
3. I am married
4. I have a dependent child
5. My parents are eligible for or are receiving housing assistance under the Section 8 program
THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:
1. Bring in birth certificates, social security cards for all household members when turning in application.
2. Report all medical expenses if you are 62 years or older, disabled or handicapped.
-doctor, dentist, hospital care, medical insurance premiums, prescriptions, eye glasses, hearing aids, etc…
3. Employment-Bring your latest check stub showing wage rate and number of hours.
4. Educational Scholarships & Grants-Bring your award letter and billings
